Canada Regional Comparison: British Columbia vs Ontario
For our Canadian community members, the choice often comes down to the big two: British Columbia (BC) and Ontario (ON). Both provinces have updated their ID designs recently, moving to highly complex polycarbonate layouts that feature intricate landscape backgrounds and multiple security windows. I’ve had the chance to review both from the same vendor to see which one is more "convincing" in a real-world setting.
The British Columbia design is visually stunning, featuring a mountain landscape that requires perfect color calibration. The vendor I used managed to get the "BC green" exactly right, avoiding the "neon" look that identifies many cheap cards. The transparency window in the BC card is also very impressive, with the secondary photo etched directly into the plastic rather than just being a transparent print. It feels very authentic to the touch.
The Ontario Advantage
- Trillium Color Shift: The Ontario design features a color-shifting flower that is a major security indicator. This version shifted smoothly from pink to green, which is the gold standard for ON cards.
- Tactile Raised Text: Ontario IDs have very prominent raised printing for the DOB and name. The "feel" of this card was spot on.
- Local Recognition: Because Ontario is so large, the design is recognized almost everywhere in Canada, making it a safe "generic" choice.
If you are looking for pure visual impact, the BC card is the winner. However, for sheer "passability" across the country, the Ontario card is hard to beat. The choice depends on where you plan to use it. If you’re in Vancouver, the BC card is a must; if you’re in Toronto or Montreal, the Ontario card might be a safer bet due to the sheer volume of them in circulation. Both are excellent examples of how far novelty ID technology has come in recent years.
