Discussion: More on Color Matching Accuracy and Environmental Factors
Following up on our earlier discussions about color matching, I wanted to address how environmental factors—both during production and during verification—can affect how we perceive the colors on our cards. We know that "matching" is hard, but did you know that the light you use to look at your card can completely change its appearance? Let’s talk about color perception and accuracy. How do we see the true colors?
First off, never judge color accuracy under artificial light. Fluorescent and LED lights often have a "cool" or "warm" cast that will distort the colors of the card. The only way to see the true colors is under natural, diffused sunlight. This is how professional verification is done, and it’s how you should check your new orders. Let’s talk about light sources.
How to Properly Verify Color Accuracy at Home
- Use Natural Light: Take your card to a window during the day (but avoid direct, harsh sunlight). This will give you the most accurate view of the colors and gradients.
- Compare Side-by-Side: If you have an official ID for reference, hold it right next to the novelty version under the same natural light. This is the only way to see the subtle differences in hue and saturation.
- Account for Aging: Remember that official IDs can fade over time. If you’re comparing a brand-new novelty ID to a 4-year-old official one, the colors might naturally be different.
I’ve noticed that some of the newer Canada province IDs have incredibly complex pastel colors that are very sensitive to lighting.
