Discussion: Addressing More Hologram Authenticity and Quality Questions

Building on our previous discussion about holograms, I wanted to address some of the more "technical" questions that members of our community are asking. We know that "shimmer" is important, but how do we evaluate the more complex features like multi-colored OVI (Optically Variable Ink) and multi-layered holographic overlays? These are the details that separate the pros from the amateurs.

First off, OVI is not the same as a simple hologram. OVI actually changes color (e.g., from gold to green) as you change the angle of the light, rather than just reflecting a rainbow. If your "OVI" feature is just a single-color holographic sticker, it’s not an accurate replication. The best vendors use actual optically variable inks for these features.

Technical Details to Look for in High-End Holograms

  • Rainbow Separation: In a high-quality hologram, you should be able to see distinct colors of the rainbow as you rotate the card, not just a muddy gray shimmer.
  • Depth and Paralax: Some holograms have a "3D" effect where certain elements appear to move more than others when the card is tilted. This is a very advanced feature that only the top shops can get right.
  • Resolution of the Overlay: The images within the hologram (like state seals or text) should be sharp and recognizable, not just blurry shapes.

I’ve noticed that some of the newer US and UK IDs have incredibly intricate holographic designs that are getting harder and harder to replicate. What are your recent observations? Have you found any vendors who are currently leading the pack in OVI and multi-layered hologram technology? Let’s keep this technical discussion going!

I compared a few options and this was definitely the best quality.
