Discussion: Evaluating Hologram Authenticity and Quality
Holograms are one of the most visible security features on any ID, and for many people, they are the primary indicator of quality. But what actually makes a hologram "authentic" in the novelty market? I wanted to start a discussion about how to evaluate the quality of the holograms on your latest orders.
First off, a high-quality hologram should be crisp and clear, not blurry or "muddy." When you tilt the card, the images should shift and change naturally, showing multi-layered details and specific state or province symbols. Poorly made holograms often look like simple silver stickers, which is a major red flag.
Key Features of High-End Holograms
- Multi-layered Depth: The hologram should have a sense of depth, with different elements appearing to sit on different levels.
- Color Shift: The colors within the hologram should change smoothly as you rotate the card, showing a full spectrum of light.
- Perfect Alignment: The hologram should be perfectly centered and should not overlap any critical text fields unless it is supposed to.
I’ve noticed that some of the newer US state IDs have incredibly complex holographic overlays that are very hard to replicate. Has anyone recently compared a novelty version to an original? Which vendors are currently leading the way in holographic technology? Let’s share our observations and help each other find the most realistic-looking cards.
