Discussion: More on Material Durability and Long-Term Care
Following up on our earlier discussion about card durability, I wanted to dive into how we can actually take care of our IDs to make them last as long as possible. We know that polycarbonate and Teslin are tough, but they aren’t invincible. If you want your high-end prop to stay looking "mint" for years, you need to treat it with a bit of respect.
The biggest enemy of any ID is "wallet wear." The constant friction of being pulled in and out of a tight leather pocket can eventually wear down even the best lamination. If you have multiple cards in the same slot, they can also scratch each other. A simple plastic sleeve can go a long way in preventing this.
Tips for Extending the Life of Your Novelty ID
- Use a Protective Sleeve: A thin, clear plastic sleeve will protect the surface from scratches and prevent "ink transfer" from other cards.
- Avoid Extreme Heat: Don’t leave your ID in a hot car. High temperatures can cause the layers to expand at different rates, potentially leading to delamination.
- Clean Gently: If your card gets dirty, use a soft, damp cloth and a tiny bit of mild soap. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these will destroy the security features.
I’ve had one ID for over two years now, and because I’ve kept it in a sleeve, it still looks brand new. The holograms are clear and the barcode still scans perfectly.
