Discussion: More Photo Requirements Clarification

Building on our previous discussion about photo requirements, I wanted to address some of the more "technical" questions that have come up. We know about lighting and backgrounds, but what about things like photo resolution, aspect ratio, and the "head-to-body" ratio? These are the details that often determine if an ID looks "off" or "official."

Most vendors prefer a high-resolution JPEG or PNG. The "sweet spot" is usually around 1200x1600 pixels. Anything lower might look blurry when printed, and anything much higher is just unnecessary file size. It’s also important to make sure the photo isn’t compressed or "saved for web," which can introduce artifacts that the vendor’s printer will pick up.

Advanced Tips for a Better ID Photo

  • Head-to-Body Ratio: Your face and hair should take up about 70-80% of the photo. Don’t stand too far away, and don’t crop it too tightly yourself—let the vendor handle the final crop.
  • Natural Skin Tones: Avoid using filters or any "beauty" settings on your camera. You want your skin to look exactly as it does in person so the color matching works correctly.
  • Eye Level: Make sure the camera is at eye level. If it’s too high or too low, it will distort the proportions of your face.

I always recommend having a friend take the photo for you rather than trying to do a selfie. A selfie usually has a bit of "arm stretch" or "wide angle" distortion that can make your face look different. What other technical tips have you guys found that make a difference? Let’s keep this technical discussion going!
