Discussion: How to Conduct a Fair Quality Comparison (Part 2)
Following up on our earlier discussion about quality comparisons, I wanted to dive into some of the more "technical" features that we should be looking at when we have cards from different shops side-by-side. Visuals are important, but it’s the hidden features that often reveal the true level of craftsmanship. Let’s talk about how to compare the "invisible" details.
First off, compare the UV features under identical lighting. Use the same 365nm blacklight for both cards and look for differences in brightness, sharpness, and color accuracy of the hidden images. A high-quality UV feature should pop and have very clean edges, while a lower-quality one might look faint or blurry.
Advanced Comparison Checklist
- Holographic Alignment: Look at where the holograms sit in relation to the printed text. Are they in the same spot on both cards? Do they correctly avoid covering critical data fields?
- Microprint Resolution: Use a magnifying glass to read the microprint on both cards. Which one is sharper? Which one uses the correct state-specific text?
- Encoded Data Format: Use a PDF417 decoder app to look at the raw data in the barcodes. Are they both formatted correctly? Does one have more detailed info than the other?
I recently compared two different Oregon IDs and the differences in the UV state seal were massive. One was multi-colored and sharp, while the other was just a single-color green blob. It really pays to do these deep-dive comparisons. What have you guys noticed when comparing your latest orders? Let’s share our "side-by-side" findings.
