Discussion: Conducting a Deep-Dive Quality Comparison with Competitors
Building on our previous discussions, I wanted to start a thread about how to conduct a truly "deep-dive" quality comparison. We’ve covered the basics, but what about the features that require specialized equipment to verify? How do we compare the things that are invisible to the naked eye? Let’s talk about professional-level comparison techniques.
First off, invest in a good jeweler’s loupe and a 365nm UV light. These tools allow you to compare microprint quality and UV feature accuracy at a much higher level. You’ll be surprised at the differences you can see once you start looking at the cards under 10x magnification.
Deep-Dive Comparison Techniques
- Microprint Legibility: Use your loupe to read the microprint on each card. Which vendor is using the correct jurisdiction-specific text? Which one is sharper?
- UV Feature Pop: Compare the brightness and sharpness of the hidden images under a 365nm light. A high-quality UV feature should be bright and have very clean edges.
- Encoded Data Detail: Use a PDF417 decoder app to look at the raw data in the barcodes. Which card has more detailed and accurately formatted info?
I’ve recently started doing these deep-dive comparisons and it has completely changed my view of which vendors are truly leading the market. Some of the "big names" actually have lower-quality microprint than some of the newer, smaller shops. What have your deep-dive findings been? Let’s share our "under-the-microscope" observations!
