Following up on our earlier discussions about comparisons, I wanted to focus on how we can provide even more "technical" feedback to the community after we’ve compared cards side-by-side. Visuals and tactile feel are great, but what about the technical performance? How do we compare the "reliability" of two different IDs in a fair way? Let’s talk about structured technical comparison. How do we test like a pro?
The key is consistency in your testing methods. If you’re testing scannability, use the same three apps on the same smartphone for both cards. If you’re checking UV features, use the same 365nm light in the same dark room. This ensures that the only variable you’re testing is the quality of the ID itself. Let’s talk about your "testing protocol."
Technical Comparison Checklist
- Scannability Consistency: Scan each card 10 times in a row using the same app. How many times did each one "pass" on the first try? This is a great measure of reliability.
- UV Feature Pop and Detail: Compare the brightness of the UV images side-by-side. Is one noticeably brighter than the other? Are the edges sharper on one?
- Encoded Data Detail: Use a PDF417 decoder app to look at the raw data strings. Does one vendor include more "optional" data fields (like eye color or weight) than the other?
I’ve always found that a "reliability score" is the most useful way to compare technical features. If a card scans perfectly 10/10 times, that is a huge indicator of quality.
