Discussion: Are Rush Order Options Actually Worth the Extra Cost?
When you’re in a hurry to get your novelty ID, the "rush order" or "priority processing" option can be very tempting. Most vendors offer this for an extra $20 to $50, promising to move your order to the front of the line. But the question is: are these options actually worth the extra cost, or are they just a way for vendors to make a few extra bucks?
In my experience, "rush" usually only applies to the production stage. It doesn’t necessarily mean the shipping will be faster. If a vendor has a 5-day backlog, a rush order might get your card made in 24 hours. But once it’s in the mail, it’s at the mercy of the courier just like every other package.
What to Consider Before Paying for Rush Processing
- Current Backlog: If a vendor is already turning orders around in 3 days, a rush order might only save you 24-48 hours. Is that worth $30 to you?
- Shipping Method: If you’re paying for rush production but using standard shipping, you’re still going to be waiting two weeks. It’s usually better to spend that extra money on *faster shipping* instead.
- Quality Risk: While professional vendors maintain their standards, there is always a tiny risk that a "rushed" card might not get the same level of final inspection as a standard one.
I’ve used rush options twice when I was on a tight deadline for a project, and both times the cards arrived about 3-4 days sooner than usual. For me, it was worth it. But if you’re not in a huge hurry, I’d suggest saving that money and putting it towards your next order. What are your thoughts? Have you had any great (or disappointing) experiences with rush orders?
