Discussion: Addressing More Persistent Scanability and Data Format Concerns

Building on our previous discussions about scannability, I wanted to focus on the technical side of the encoded data. We know that a "pass" on a smartphone app is a good start, but as professional scanning technology becomes more advanced, the data formats are becoming even more critical. Are our IDs actually returning the right "strings" in the right order? Let’s talk about data format accuracy.

Every jurisdiction follows AAMVA standards, but there are still many subtle variations. The way the name, address, and birth date are formatted in the 2D barcode must be an exact match for the state or province. If the "City" field is in the wrong place, or the "Weight" is formatted differently, a professional scanner will flag it.

What Technical Details to Check in Your Barcode Data

  • Data Delimiters: The characters used to separate different data fields (like asterisks or semicolons) must be correct for the specific jurisdiction.
  • Field IDs: Each piece of data has a specific ID code (e.g., "DAA" for full name). These must be accurate and in the correct sequence.
  • Encoded Checksums: Many barcodes include a "checksum" at the end to verify data integrity. If this isn’t calculated correctly, the scan will fail.

I’ve been using some advanced PDF417 decoder tools to look at the raw data in my recent orders, and I’m seeing some impressive results from the top vendors. They are clearly doing their homework on data formatting. What tools are you guys using to verify your scannability? Have you found any specific data errors that we should warn the community about? Let’s keep this technical discussion going!
