Following up on our earlier discussions about scannability, I wanted to address some of the more "hands-on" questions about how to actually verify your barcodes yourself. We know that smartphone apps are a good start, but are they enough? And what should we do if our IDs pass on one app but fail on another? Let’s talk about barcode verification. How do we ensure they’re perfect?
First off, not all scanning apps use the same algorithms. Some apps only look at the basic data structure, while others perform a more thorough check of the encoded "checksums" and formatting strings. This is why a card might pass on one app and fail on another. Let’s talk about professional-level verification. How do we do it?
Tips for Verifying Your Barcodes at Home
- Use Multiple Apps: Test your card with at least three different popular scanning apps to ensure consistent results across different software.
- Check Raw Data: Use an app that allows you to see the "raw data string" encoded in the barcode. Compare this string with official AAMVA standards for the specific jurisdiction.
- Verify Checksums: Some advanced apps can also verify the internal "checksums" within the barcode data. If these are correct, it’s a very good sign of quality.
I’ve noticed that some of the newer US and Canadian IDs have incredibly complex barcode data structures that are getting harder to replicate correctly.
