Discussion: Need Advice on State Selection? Let’s Talk Options

If you’re new to the world of novelty IDs, one of the most overwhelming decisions is simply choosing which state to go with. Do you go with your "home" state, or do you pick one that is known for having a simpler design (and therefore being easier to replicate)? Or maybe you want a state that is currently "in style" for collectors?

In my opinion, you should always look for a balance between design complexity and vendor reputation. Some vendors specialize in specific states and can do them better than anyone else. For example, if you want a New York ID, you need to find a vendor who has mastered the multi-layer polycarbonate feel of the latest cards.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a State

  • Design Version: Some states have recently updated their designs. Make sure your vendor is offering the *current* version, as older designs can look suspicious if they are still being issued.
  • Security Features: Some states have "easier" holograms or UV features than others. If you’re worried about quality, a simpler state might be a safer bet.
  • Your Own Location: Sometimes it’s better to choose a state that is familiar to you, so you can easily verify the details like the address format and zip codes.

I’m currently leaning towards Oregon or Utah for my next order because I love the modern look of their latest cards. What are you guys currently seeing as the "best" states to order? Are there any states that we should avoid because the current novelty versions are falling behind the official updates? Let’s help each other make the best choice.
