Discussion: Addressing More Template Accuracy and Visual Accuracy Concerns
Following up on our earlier discussions about templates, I wanted to focus on how we can actually evaluate template accuracy ourselves. We know that designs change rapidly, but what are the "tells" that a template might be outdated or inaccurate? I wanted to start a discussion about what to look for when you’re evaluating a vendor’s latest work. How do we spot the pros?
First off, compare the font styles and weights. Official ID designs use very specific, often proprietary, fonts. If the font on your novelty ID looks "too thin," "too thick," or just slightly "off," it’s a sign that the template wasn’t built with the correct assets. Look at the spacing between letters and the shape of specific numbers like "4" or "7." Let’s talk about visual precision.
Template Accuracy Checklist
- Font Style and Weight: Compare the text on your card with high-resolution reference photos of official IDs. Do the fonts match?
- Background Detail: Look at the intricate patterns in the background. Are they sharp and clear, or do they look like a low-resolution scan?
- Alignment of Elements: Check where the text, photos, and holographic features sit in relation to each other. Are they in the correct locations?
I’ve noticed that some of the newer US state IDs have incredibly complex background patterns that are very hard to replicate correctly in a template.
